You Bought This?

Last September I took Nicole to her first auction. And what a first to go to. To give you a visual; it was raining like cats and dogs, mud was up to our ankles and all five kids were in tow. Needless to say the kids didn’t last long and we had NO intentions of keeping them with us once we saw how fantastic this auction was. Quick call to the husbands and the kids happily went home. With our number in hand we could barely absorb the sure volume of stuff. I think we kept saying, “Oh my GOSH…did you see that?” Really every square inch of two barns, two tents and an enormous lot was filled with furniture, art work, piles of newspapers, and stuff. It was like a crazy episode of hoarders –  in a good way! Our heads we’re spinnning.

Early on we scored some old wood ladders and shutters (much to the chagrin of our husbands who had to come back and get our loot.)  The people watching experience was enough to keep us going all by itself. Let’s just say that some of these folks looked like they didn’t have a dime in their pocket, yet we’re bidding hundreds. Guess they knew what they were doing! Nicole scored an awesome little cabinet for $5…yeah baby, that’s how we roll. She had her first purchase under her belt and I could tell there was no stopping her. I ran out to go grab coffee for us, only to return to, “look what I got us.”  A huge round tray…I thought, “you bought this?”  We laughed when noticing the Asian inspired engraving. There’s nothing wrong with Asian decor, but I wasn’t sure that it was either of our styles….hmmm…at the very least we’d throw it in a yard sale.

 Before…

Guess where it sat? Yup, in my basement until a few weeks ago when I was using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old White on another project. I had already checked to make sure that we didn’t have some small fortune in our hands before I decided to throw some paint on it. I put a little on, wiped with a cloth and to my surprise liked it. ASCP makes everything look better! Sometimes it pays to take a chance.

For now the infamous tray takes center stage on my dining room table and I really think it looks pretty good. Don’t know that I’ll keep it, after all this was Nicole’s purchase. Funny though, she hasn’t asked to have it…perhaps seeing the “after” will do the trick.

Not bad huh. I think Nicole would agree that this was a fantastic day full of great deals (we’ll be sure to share in another post), awesome people watching and unexpected finds. This surely won’t be our last auction.

Leave us a comment and tell us what’s your most unexpected auction or flea market find.

Menagerie Monday – Vintage Style Room Inspiration

It’s official–Winter Break week in NY is over. My family and I spent the majority of the week curled up in front of the television with a horrible virus. Fevers, chills and sore throats replaced the skiing, shopping and time with friends that we had hoped for. It was disappointing, but I’m thankful for everyone’s recovery–just in time to return to school! (Oddly enough, my children are not feeling that same appreciation.)

Today I’m going to catch up on all my household chores and then GET OUT OF THE HOUSE. No animated movies, no one to play nursemaid to.  Excuse me while I do a little dance.

In the meantime, I thought I’d share some vintage style room inspiration today. Just a random collection of rooms that make me feel happy, rooms that inspire me to get painting, or to finally hang that new light that still sits on the floor.

Maybe today finds you in need of some inspiration as well? If so, I hope these rooms help you to get up and get going, or perhaps even better–to simply sit back, relax, sip your tea and dream of the possibilities within your own home.

I can’t get enough of this table  and that grey molding.

I love all this white, and those mirrors, and that pillow–need I go on?

Right this very minute I am searching my walls for a space to hang a clock like that.

This space is only missing TWO things–my Mac and me.

This industrial style office is spectacular. Especially if you are looking to create a masculine-friendly space.

I’m pretty sure my family would fight over getting the coveted  No.1 chair, but it would be worth it!

The juxtaposition of the stark white cabinets with that farm table makes me swoon.

I’m curious to know which one of these rooms is your favorite. Let me know in the comments!

(Mine is #4–the office with the awesome hutch. Or maybe #1…)

Happy Monday Friends!
